No one does prime rib like Don Hall's, and our recent lunch at the Guesthouse Grill was no exception.
My husband grew up in Fort Wayne, and has a longstanding family legacy with Hall's, as several of his siblings and other family members have worked at various Hall's locations over the years. He introduced me to the chain while we were dating, and we look forward to allowing some time on most of our trips to town to visit one of the restaurants.
Guesthouse is closest to where he grew up, and we've been there several times over the years, even staying there overnight on occasion. This time we were staying nearby, and I was working remotely from our hotel room in advance of a family dinner that evening. We decided to duck out for a quick lunch, and the Guesthouse Grill seemed the obvious choice (at least to me)!
We both had the prime rib. He chose the mashed potatoes as his side, and I had the onion rings. I'd forgotten how huge they were -- just delicious!
The only bobble came when my prime rib arrived with its juice on the lukewarm side. But when I brought this to my server's attention, she whisked it away with an apology and brought it out just a few minutes later, and said the chef had also apologized and personally heated it for me. While it was a bit darker than when it had first arrived, it was still nicely toward the medium rare side, and it was mouthwateringly tender and wonderful! Again, no one does prime rib like Don Hall's! It's truly the best!
Our server was friendly, and we ended up chatting with some of the other restaurant employees about Don Hall's over the years. It was a relaxing, satisfying, and delicious way to spend an hour or so on an otherwise busy weekday afternoon. -

I had the Prime Rib and will go back for it. The brunch buffet looked good but not as good as I remember from years back.

This is an overlooked restaurant. I have overlooked it for the three years I have lived here. It is inside the Guesthouse hotel.
The hotel is beautiful in an old way. The restaurant matches the style of the hotel. Nice wood trim.
The food is very good. From the menu, it looks like they do Prime Rib, elevated sandwiches, soups, and salad. They also have a daily special. Today it was fish and chips that looked good.
I had the Guesthouse sandwich. It had to be 1/2 lb of ground steak meat. It was huge and sloppy, but good. Two napkins are required. I also had the onion rings. The rings are cut 1/2" to 3/4" think and you get three. The rings were good, but too big. The batter breaks off if you cut them up. I would try something other than the rings next time.
My wife got the Italian wrap. She said it was good. They give you two of them, which is too much for lunch. Good to take for left overs though.
We will be back.

Underwhelming is an understatement... The good folks that have given this place a 5 star rating either work there or were highly blessed to be there on a perfect day. To be fair, we were there on a coupon dinner and then our whole meal was comped. We paid for our drinks and a generous tip. The food was less then average. My steak was good, the sides were edible, but far from desirable. The atmosphere was nice, never did see a hostess when we arrived, the staffing was obviously a huge mess this day. We ended up seating ourselves at the bar. The bar tender was good, said he was a manager and apologized for the VERY slow service. He made me a good L.I.T. and then looked up how to make my wife a drink, but did it well. We waited for one hour for our dinner. About 45 minutes into our wait we asked for a basket of french fries to hold over the 'hanger' setting in, we were told he (bartender) couldn't order them the kitchen was so backed up we would never get them. They have a limited menu, which is smart, but I'd expect they do those few things very good, not from what we experienced. This place is not worth a return visit even though the bartender was very nice and gave us back our free meal coupon.
